The Ogun State Government has ordered the shutdown of seven lead-recycling factories and called for an immediate suspension of lead ingot exports following growing fears of environmental contamination in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area.

The action came after a viral video raised alarm over suspected lead poisoning in the community, prompting an emergency inspection led by the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya. He toured the area with a joint team of experts from the Ministries of Environment and Health, the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).

During the inspection, all industries involved in Used Lead-Acid Battery recycling were sealed pending further investigation. Oresanya told residents there was “no cause for panic,” but stressed that the government must act swiftly to protect public health.

Authorities have now launched a comprehensive Health and Process Audit across the industrial axis. The assessment will test lead levels in residents, as well as in soil, air, and water sources to determine the extent of contamination.

Government officials also pledged to publish the findings once the investigation is completed and to review the accuracy of earlier test results circulating online.

The state’s position signals a decisive step toward addressing long-standing environmental concerns in Ogijo, where unchecked industrial operations have raised fears of a potential public health emergency.
