Nigeria has appointed five new envoys in a renewed effort to reinforce its diplomatic visibility and strengthen engagement across key regions of the world.
At a brief ceremony in Abuja, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, presented letters of credence to the diplomats, urging them to “uphold professionalism” and remain steadfast in advancing Nigeria’s strategic interests.
Among the new appointees is Ambassador Olawale Emmanuel Awe, now Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to ECOWAS, a role considered crucial as West Africa navigates security, political stability and regional integration challenges.
Others include Amb. Mairo Musa Abbas, appointed Consul General in Guangzhou, China, a major hub for Nigerian traders and business ties; Amb. N.O. Okey-Uche, the new Consul General to South Africa; Amb. Ojo Olobode Steve, posted to Cameroon; and Amb. Samalia Goni, who will serve as Chargé d’Affaires in Tripoli, Libya, where Nigeria continues to push for better protection of its citizens.
Tuggar reminded the envoys that their mission goes beyond protocol — they are expected to strengthen bilateral relationships, defend Nigerian interests, support citizens abroad and contribute to shaping the country’s foreign policy direction.
The real issue, diplomats say, is that Nigeria is repositioning itself in a fast-changing global environment, where strategic representation is vital for security cooperation, trade expansion, diaspora protection and regional influence.
