Anambra State Commissioner for Lands, Barr. Offornze Amucheazi (SAN), has called on lawyers in the state to encourage their clients to resolve disputes through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms, stressing that it offers quicker and more cost-effective solutions than involving the police.
Speaking at an event organized by Pinnacle Tree Attorneys in Awka to mark their third anniversary, Amucheazi decried the high sums of money residents spend on police over matters that could be amicably settled through ADR. He warned that the police are profiting from disputes that could otherwise be resolved civilly.
The commissioner dismissed concerns that ADR would reduce litigation or threaten lawyers’ income, explaining that modern ADR combines aspects of litigation and traditional dispute resolution, allowing legal practitioners to continue benefiting from the process.
“Many people think ADR will take us away from legal practice, but that is not true. Today’s ADR combines the features of both litigation and traditional dispute resolution, and lawyers still make money from it while everyone is happy,”
