The Nigerian Army has successfully rescued 12 teenage girls abducted by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists in Mussa District, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The victims, aged between 15 and 20, were kidnapped on November 23 while harvesting crops on their family farmlands. Their rescue was achieved on Saturday, November 29, following a swift, intelligence-driven operation by troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) in southern Borno.
Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt-Col Appolonia Anele, confirmed that the girls have been moved to a secure military facility where they are receiving medical attention, psychological support and proper debriefing. They will be formally reunited with their families once these processes are completed.
The rescued girls include: Fatima Shaibu (17), Fatima Umaru (15), Hauwa Abubakar (18), Saliha Muhammed (15), Sadiya Umaru (17), Amira Babel (15), Zara Adamu (17), Nana Shaibu (15), Zainab Musa (18), Zainab Muhammed (17), Jamila Saidu (15) and Hauwa Hamidu (17).
Their rescue has brought relief to the local community, which was thrown into fear and mourning after the abduction.
The military high command commended the troops for their swift response and acknowledged the vital role played by local informants and security partners who provided timely information. Troops are continuing pursuit operations across southern Borno to track down fleeing ISWAP fighters and prevent further attacks.
The Army also urged communities to sustain their support for ongoing operations by sharing credible intelligence that can help defeat terrorism and secure the region.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen Waidi Shaibu, has charged newly promoted senior officers to justify their elevation through exemplary leadership and unwavering dedication to duty.
The Army Council, on November 27, approved the promotion of 28 Brigadier-Generals to Major General and 77 Colonels to Brigadier General — a total of 105 senior officers.
While congratulating them and their families, the COAS urged the officers to deepen their professional conduct and embrace bold, innovative and unconventional approaches capable of delivering swift results to Nigeria’s complex security challenges.
He reminded them that their primary responsibility remains the defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity and stressed that their loyalty to the Constitution must remain absolute and beyond compromise.
