Abuja — Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from his position with immediate effect, citing health reasons, the Presidency announced on Monday, December 1, 2025.

In a resignation letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Badaru stated that he was stepping down due to personal health concerns. The President has accepted his resignation and expressed gratitude for his years of service to the nation.

Badaru, 63, served as a two-term Governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment as Defence Minister on August 21, 2023 by President Tinubu. His tenure coincided with growing national security challenges, culminating in President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency, the details of which are expected to be shared in the coming days.

The Presidency indicated that President Tinubu is expected to inform the Senate of Badaru’s successor later this week, signaling the next step in restructuring the nation’s defence leadership.

This development comes at a critical time for Nigeria, as the country grapples with rising insecurity, banditry, and other defence-related challenges, making the leadership transition in the Ministry of Defence a matter of significant public interest.

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, resigns on health grounds. His departure comes amid rising insecurity and President Tinubu’s national security emergency. Who will take the helm at this critical time?

“As Nigerians watch closely, the leadership of the Ministry of Defence will be key in tackling the country’s security challenges. The next appointment will set the tone for the government’s fight against insecurity.”
