Abuja, 2 December 2025 – The Nigerian government has granted temporary asylum to Guinea-Bissau opposition presidential candidate Fernando Dia Da Costa, providing protection within the Nigerian Embassy in Bissau following credible threats to his life.

The decision, formally communicated in a letter dated 30 November 2025 from Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs to the President of the ECOWAS Commission, underscores Nigeria’s commitment to regional peace, stability, and democratic governance.

Al-Kasim Abdulkadir, Media Aide to the Minister, confirmed that the move aims to de-escalate tensions, promote social cohesion, and prevent further instability in the West African sub-region. He emphasized that the action aligns fully with ECOWAS principles and reflects Nigeria’s historic role as a stabilizing force in the region.

The asylum comes ahead of Guinea-Bissau’s presidential run-off election later this month, in which Mr. Da Costa is a leading contender, highlighting Nigeria’s proactive stance in ensuring peaceful democratic processes across West Africa.

Abdulkadir noted: “This action is guided solely by the imperatives of peace, human security, and regional stability, in full alignment with ECOWAS principles and Nigeria’s historic role as a stabilising force in West Africa.”

Nigeria’s swift response signals its determination to safeguard human security and uphold democratic governance in the face of rising political threats in neighboring countries.
