A remarkable discovery has emerged from Borno State as the Police Command in the state assisted a woman in recovering gold she buried 15 years ago while escaping a Boko Haram invasion.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, the woman—whose identity was withheld for security reasons—returned to Mallam Fatori after more than a decade in displacement. Upon her return, she approached the police for help in locating the spot where she hid her valuables during the heat of the insurgency.
Fifteen years earlier, as Boko Haram fighters stormed the community, she hurriedly buried several pieces of gold in the sand, hoping to retrieve them when safety returned. But like many displaced residents, she spent years away, uncertain whether the items would survive looting, erosion, or the passage of time.
Guided by her recollection and supported by officers of the Mallam Fatori Division, the team excavated the marked area and successfully recovered the gold, now valued at N23.6 million.
ASP Daso said the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, hailed the DPO and his operatives for their honesty, diligence, and transparency throughout the recovery process. He noted that the incident demonstrates the Police Command’s ongoing efforts to restore trust and strengthen community confidence, especially in areas severely affected by insurgency.
Residents of Mallam Fatori have applauded the development, describing it as a sign of improved security and stability in a region once devastated by violence and displacement.
