Northern governors and traditional rulers have urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order an immediate six-month suspension of mining activities across the region as part of a coordinated strategy to combat escalating banditry, kidnappings, and insurgent activities.

The appeal was made during a high-level security meeting held in Kaduna, where regional leaders expressed concern that mining sites have become operational hubs and financial channels for criminal networks. One governor at the meeting stressed that shutting down these sites is vital because “criminal elements are using mining areas as cover and funding sources for violence.”

As part of an agreed-upon security framework, the northern leaders approved the creation of a N1 billion monthly Security Trust Fund aimed at supporting intelligence-driven operations, joint task forces, and increased logistical capacity for law enforcement.

In addition, the forum endorsed the long-debated establishment of state police, arguing that localized policing is now essential in responding swiftly and effectively to threats that vary from state to state. The leaders committed to working collaboratively with the Federal Government to ensure that the proposed measures are implemented promptly and transparently to restore safety, economic stability, and public confidence across the northern region.
