The Anambra State Ministry of Health has kicked off the fourth round of its free hydrocele surgery programme, recording 13 successful operations on the first day across the state. The intervention is supported by the Carter Centre and targets adults and individuals aged 16 years and above.

Confirming the development, the State Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Coordinator, Dr. Obikwelu Emmanuel M., said the surgeries were conducted simultaneously in three designated general hospitals. Umueri General Hospital carried out five surgeries, Enugwu-Ukwu General Hospital completed four, while another four were performed at Ekwulobia General Hospital.

Dr. Obikwelu noted that all the procedures were handled by trained medical personnel, adding that every patient is responding positively to treatment. He further disclosed that no complications were recorded.

The Carter Center’s Project Director, Dr. Adamu Salau, reassured the state government of the organisation’s continued support for humanitarian health programmes in Anambra, especially for residents who may not be able to afford specialized medical care.

Similarly, the Carter Center Program Officer for Anambra, Mrs. Attamah E. R., commended the local government areas that mobilized residents for the outreach. She emphasized that the intervention is specifically designed to assist adults suffering from hydrocele.

At the Enugwu-Ukwu centre, the exercise attracted emotional reactions from families of beneficiaries. One of them, Madam Iyom Anthonia Obidike from Abatete, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the state government, describing the free surgery as a huge relief at a time when many families are struggling financially.

The Ministry of Health encouraged more eligible residents in the affected areas to take advantage of the ongoing exercise. It assured the public that the programme will continue as planned and that qualified medical teams remain on standby to provide safe and effective care throughout the intervention.
