A National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officer was fatally shot during a raid on a notorious drug den in Ama Hausa, Bonny Island, Rivers State, in a violent confrontation that underscores the escalating risks faced by anti‑narcotics operatives in the line of duty. The deadly incident occurred on Friday, February 6, 2026, during an intelligence‑led operation targeting a well‑known enclave suspected of harbouring major drug traffickers and dealers.

NDLEA operatives, acting on credible information about the location and activities of the drug network, stormed the compound in Ama Hausa where they encountered resistance. During the course of the raid, an NDLEA officer was shot and killed, becoming one of the latest casualties among security personnel engaged in Nigeria’s enduring narcotics war.

In the aftermath of the confrontation, NDLEA confirmed that six suspects were arrested at the scene. The detainees are now in custody and expected to face prosecution on a range of drug‑related charges as investigations continue.

Officials from the agency disclosed that the operation yielded the seizure of large quantities of illicit drugs, including cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, skunk and tramadol, among other controlled substances. These seizures are part of a broader anti‑narcotics crackdown being led by NDLEA as it seeks to disrupt trafficking syndicates and dismantle networks that supply and distribute dangerous illegal drugs across the region.

The killing of the NDLEA officer has prompted condemnation from law enforcement officials and civil society groups, who described the loss as a stark reminder of the dangers inherent in drug enforcement operations. The NDLEA has pledged to pursue justice in the case and to bring all individuals responsible for the officer’s death to account.

The agency’s ongoing efforts in Rivers State form part of a sustained, nationwide initiative to tackle illicit drug trafficking and abuse. Beyond this tragic encounter, NDLEA operations continue to target major trafficking routes, syndicates and hideouts across the country, with frequent seizures and arrests recorded in recent months as part of coordinated enforcement action.
