The Defence Headquarters has reported significant gains in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism in the North East, with troops under Operation Hadin Kai neutralizing more than 30 terrorists and assisting over 700 Nigerian refugees in returning home within a week. The update was provided by Major-General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, highlighting the impact of intensified military operations across Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa States.

According to Onoja, the successes were achieved through aggressive, intelligence-driven operations targeting Boko Haram, ISWAP, and Jama’atu Ansarul Sunnah (JAS) groups. These operations combined ground troops, air support, and collaboration with local security teams to dismantle terrorist networks, recover weapons, and rescue victims of abductions.

On January 30, troops carried out clearance operations in the Timbuktu Triangle near Kimba, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno, resulting in the elimination of over 20 terrorists, including a notorious commander known as Julaibib. Similar operations were conducted in Gwoza LGA of Borno, as well as Hong and Mubi North LGAs of Adamawa, yielding further neutralizations, arrests of kidnappers, and the rescue of abductees.

In a notable achievement, troops discovered and destroyed three major terrorist detention facilities along the Damboa–Gujba axis, each reportedly capable of holding about 300 captives. During these operations, 70 victims were rescued, providing a critical relief to individuals previously held by terror groups.

Onoja further stated that a second group of approximately 700 Nigerian refugees was successfully repatriated from Cameroon through the Banki border in Bama LGA of Borno, under strict security arrangements. These efforts were part of broader initiatives to restore safety and stability, allowing displaced communities to return and rebuild their lives.

Ongoing operations also led to the arrest of logistics suppliers, recovery of arms and ammunition, and air missions that destroyed five suspected vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs) along the Marguna road in Kaga LGA, Borno. These actions, according to the Defence Headquarters, have disrupted terrorist networks and improved conditions for safe resettlement in affected areas.

Major-General Onoja emphasized that the military remains committed to maintaining pressure on insurgents, dismantling their infrastructure, and facilitating the safe return of civilians displaced by prolonged conflict. He noted that these operations are part of a sustained effort to stabilize the North East, strengthen community security, and prevent the resurgence of terrorist activities.
