AWKA — Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command, attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Awkuzu, have arrested a 32-year-old man, Ifeanyi Ekemezie, in connection with a series of kidnappings, armed robberies, and cult-related activities in Awka and surrounding communities. The arrest occurred in the early hours of February 17, 2026, at Isuaniocha.
The investigation follows an earlier arrest on February 13, 2026, of 33-year-old Ndubuisi Anyakaku, whose bank account was allegedly used to receive a ransom payment of ₦1,000,000 from a victim abducted in Awka. Authorities confirmed that the case originated from an attack on December 31, 2025, when a resident of Amansea was kidnapped, shot in the leg, and robbed of ₦3,000,000 from his bank account. The assailants also made away with the victim’s Toyota Highlander Jeep. The victim was later rescued after being abandoned at an unknown location.
During interrogation, Ekemezie reportedly confessed to being a member of a three-man criminal gang involved in kidnapping and vehicle theft within Awka and its environs. He also admitted to being affiliated with the notorious Vikings Confraternity and to participating in multiple cult-related killings in the city.
The Anambra State Police Command has intensified efforts to apprehend remaining members of the gang, who are still at large, and to recover their operational weapons. A police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that further updates on the investigation and arrests will be communicated as the operation progresses.
The command emphasized its commitment to tackling violent crimes linked to cultism, armed robbery, and kidnapping, urging residents to report suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities. Community leaders in Awka have expressed support for the ongoing operations, noting that coordinated policing is critical to restoring security and confidence in the state.
The arrest of Ekemezie and continued investigation highlight the persistent challenges posed by organized criminal gangs and cult groups in southeastern Nigeria, particularly in urban centres like Awka. Authorities continue to stress the importance of citizen vigilance, cooperation with law enforcement, and adherence to safety protocols to reduce the risk of similar criminal incidents.
