A comprehensive inquiry has been launched in Kebbi State following a fire that engulfed parts of Nurul Haqq Quranic and Arabic School on Saturday evening, prompting swift action by Governor Nasir Idris to ensure the safety of students and uncover the cause of the blaze. The incident — which damaged multiple hostels and classrooms — raised widespread concern about school safety standards and emergency response practices in the region. Authorities have confirmed no loss of life, but the scale of the event has triggered a detailed state inquiry into its origins and implications.

The fire broke out in the Birnin Kebbi school complex on Saturday evening, affecting several residential hostels and classroom blocks. As smoke billowed from the compound, Governor Idris, who was en route to break his Ramadan fast with family and aides, spotted the smoke along the roadside. Acting without hesitation, he stopped his convoy to investigate and discovered the school fire. In a dramatic turn of events, he immediately ordered the evacuation of all students and contacted the Kebbi State Fire Service and other emergency responders to control the blaze.

Eyewitness reports indicate that more than 140 students were evacuated from the school premises, with firefighting crews battling the flames for several hours before bringing the situation under control. Despite observing his Ramadan fast, the governor remained at the scene throughout the emergency operation, personally overseeing evacuation efforts and ensuring that all children were accounted for and safely relocated. Authorities noted that his presence helped maintain order amid a chaotic and distressing situation for many families.

State officials later confirmed that the fire was exacerbated by the presence of gas cylinders stored in student rooms, a factor that contributed significantly to the intensity of the blaze. Firefighters battled the inferno for approximately three to four hours before extinguishing it. The governor praised the professionalism and courage of the fire service personnel, saying their rapid response prevented what could have been a far more serious tragedy.

In an official statement issued after the incident, Governor Idris described the event as unfortunate but expressed deep gratitude that there were no fatalities. He assured parents and guardians that all affected students were safe, in stable condition, and had been relocated to the school’s main branch. The governor emphasised that the safety and welfare of children in the state remain a top priority for his administration.

To ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future, the governor directed the immediate establishment of a high-powered investigative committee. This committee has been charged with determining the precise causes of the fire, assessing compliance with safety standards at the school, identifying any lapses in infrastructure or fire prevention measures, and recommending strategies to strengthen safety protocols across all educational institutions in the state. Officials stated that the committee’s findings will be made public to promote transparency and accountability.

Parents and community leaders have welcomed the governor’s hands-on involvement and the decision to launch a formal investigation, noting that prompt action likely saved lives. However, some have also voiced concerns about broader regulatory oversight of boarding schools and residential learning centres, particularly those with limited resources for infrastructure improvements and emergency response readiness. Local observers have urged authorities to expedite safety audits of all such facilities to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations.

The incident has also sparked discussion about the need for stricter enforcement of safety standards, especially in institutions that house children overnight. Education stakeholders in the state have called for regular fire drills, functional fire detection systems, and the safe storage of combustible materials such as gas cylinders to be mandatory in all school hostels. Safety experts say that such measures could reduce the risk of fire outbreaks and improve preparedness for responding to emergencies. (

Governor Idris’s decisive intervention reflects an intensified focus on student safety in Kebbi State. Since assuming office in May 2023, he has emphasised education and welfare policies, and this incident appears to have reinforced the administration’s commitment to proactive governance in crisis situations. State officials highlighted that the governor’s direct involvement was instrumental in coordinating emergency response efforts and maintaining calm among students and parents.

The fire has also prompted reflection among civil society groups about infrastructure challenges in northern Nigerian states. Many commentators noted that recurring fire events at educational facilities in various parts of the country point to systemic issues requiring sustained policy attention. They recommend that state governments collaborate with federal agencies and international partners to enhance regulatory frameworks, fund safety upgrades, and build capacity for first responders in rural and urban school environments alike.

Security presence was reported around the school in the aftermath of the fire, with local authorities maintaining order and managing crowds as relatives and concerned citizens gathered to assess the situation. Parents were informed that students would resume academic activities once safety assessments were completed and damaged facilities were repaired or certified safe.

Looking ahead, the high-powered investigative committee’s work will be closely monitored by stakeholders across the state. Officials have reiterated their intention to implement recommendations arising from the inquiry and prevent similar incidents in the future. The state government has also pledged to support affected families and ensure that students continue their education without unnecessary disruption.
