The Federal Government has unveiled the Procurement Compliance Monitoring System (PICOMS), a digital platform aimed at eliminating procurement delays and enhancing efficiency in Nigeria’s education sector. The system is designed to improve transparency, accountability, and the timely execution of projects across the Ministry of Education, its agencies, commissions, parastatals, and tertiary institutions.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, announced the initiative during a capacity-building session for procurement officers at the National Universities Commission Auditorium in Abuja. Dr. Alausa highlighted that delays in procurement processes have often hindered the implementation of key education projects due to incomplete documentation, weak submissions, and procedural lapses. He emphasized that strengthening procurement compliance is critical to ensuring that projects are delivered on schedule and that public resources are efficiently managed.
PICOMS will allow procurement processes to be managed electronically, track submissions in real time, and reduce approval timelines. The platform is expected to address recurring challenges such as incomplete documentation and weak procurement submissions, issues also highlighted by the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement, Adebowale Adebukola Adedokun.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability, and effective project delivery across the education sector, signaling a new phase of digital-driven reforms in public procurement.
