Former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration following the deadly bomb explosions that struck Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. The coordinated attacks, which occurred on the evening of March 16, 2026, killed at least 23 people and injured more than 100 others. Explosions hit a busy market, the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office flyover during the Ramadan break‑fast period. Authorities suspect involvement of militant groups, although no organisation has officially claimed responsibility.

In a statement issued on March 17, Amaechi accused the federal government of persistent failure to protect the lives and property of Nigerians. He described the bombings as evidence that the government’s security strategy is inadequate and criticised the leadership for not taking stronger action to safeguard citizens. His remarks highlighted wider frustrations about insecurity in northeastern Nigeria, a region long affected by insurgent activity.

President Tinubu, who was abroad at the time, condemned the attacks and ordered senior military and security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri to oversee the response and strengthen protection. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating terrorism and vowed that the attackers would not find safe haven. Other political leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex‑Senate President Bukola Saraki, and former presidential aspirant Rabiu Kwankwaso, also condemned the bombings and expressed condolences to victims and their families.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, a former governor of Borno State, emphasised that no religion condones the killing of innocent people, echoing calls for unity and resilience. Civic and community leaders similarly urged vigilance and solidarity amid ongoing security challenges.

Amaechi’s criticism went beyond the immediate tragedy, reflecting broader concerns about government accountability and the persistent threat of violence in the northeast. Analysts note that militant groups remain capable of carrying out coordinated strikes despite military pressure, highlighting the evolving and resilient nature of the insurgency.

Security agencies have warned residents to stay alert, particularly in crowded public spaces, and assured that capturing those responsible is a top priority. As investigations and relief efforts continue, the discussion over leadership responsibility and effective security strategy is expected to intensify.
