Gunmen Abduct Woman and One-Month-Old Baby in Kaduna Night Raid as Fear Deepens in Kachia
A woman and her 32-day-old baby girl have been abducted by suspected gunmen in Mother Cat community, Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, in an attack that has heightened fear among residents and underscored persistent insecurity in southern parts of the state.
The abduction occurred at about 8:00 p.m., according to local accounts, when armed men stormed the community and forcefully took the woman and her infant from their home. Witnesses described the operation as sudden and coordinated, with the attackers moving quickly before disappearing into surrounding areas.
A resident, identified as Comrade Ibrahim Sallau Kachia, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident and said the community has been left in shock, particularly due to the vulnerability of the victims. The kidnapping of a nursing mother and a newborn has intensified anxiety, as families worry about their safety and the health of the infant in captivity.
As of two days after the incident, there has been no confirmed contact from the kidnappers, and no ransom demand has been communicated to the family or community members. The absence of communication, while not uncommon in some kidnapping cases, has deepened uncertainty about the condition and whereabouts of the victims.
Stone Reporters note that Kachia and other parts of southern Kaduna have experienced recurring security challenges over the years, including kidnappings, armed attacks, and communal violence. The region’s geography—characterised by rural settlements and access to forested areas—has often been cited as a factor that enables armed groups to operate and evade security forces.
Residents of Mother Cat community are reported to have become increasingly concerned about safety, especially at night, when such attacks are more likely to occur. Community members have called for urgent intervention by security agencies, including increased patrols and rapid-response mechanisms to prevent further incidents.
While there has been no detailed official statement from the Kaduna State Police Command in the strongest available reporting, security sources indicate that efforts are underway to track the perpetrators and secure the release of the victims. Local vigilante groups are also said to be assisting in search efforts, though their capabilities remain limited compared to organised armed groups.
Stone Reporters note that the abduction of women and children in kidnapping incidents often creates additional humanitarian concerns, particularly in cases involving infants who require constant care. Prolonged captivity can pose severe risks to both mother and child, making rapid rescue efforts critical.
The incident comes amid broader security pressures in northern Nigeria, where kidnapping for ransom has become a widespread tactic among criminal groups and armed factions. While some cases involve quick ransom negotiations, others remain prolonged due to delayed contact or complex negotiation dynamics.
Community leaders in Kachia have urged authorities to act swiftly and decisively, warning that continued attacks could erode public confidence and disrupt daily life. They also called for improved intelligence gathering and stronger collaboration between security agencies and local communities.
For now, the fate of the abducted woman and her newborn remains unknown. Families and residents continue to wait for any sign of communication, while security efforts intensify behind the scenes to locate and rescue the victims.
