The Kebbi Hisbah Board has released two women who were arrested for alleged indecent dressing in the Badariya area of Birnin Kebbi, after counselling them on the importance of modesty and respect for community values. The board’s Director, Surajo Usman, confirmed in a statement issued to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, May 10, 2026, that the two women were detained on Friday, May 8, following complaints from residents who claimed the women were dressing inappropriately while staying in a house in the area.

According to Usman, residents reported that the women sometimes came outside their residence in attire that raised concern in the community. Hisbah officers were deployed to investigate the report, leading to the arrest of the two women. During interrogation, the women admitted to the incident but insisted they had no malicious intent. They explained that extreme heat had prompted them to wear the clothing for relief and ventilation. The women expressed remorse and pledged not to repeat the act.

Usman said the board counselled the women on upholding morality, modesty, and respect for religious and community values, including wearing decent clothing even at home. They were subsequently released and advised to conduct themselves decently going forward. He urged the public to promote good moral conduct and cooperate with the authorities to maintain peace and moral discipline in the community.

The Kebbi Hisbah Board is a religious policing agency established to enforce Sharia law in the northern state. It has previously arrested individuals for a range of offences including drug abuse, adultery, and “immoral” acts. In April 2026, the board raided two hotels and arrested four adults, two men and two women, for alleged involvement in immoral activities. The agency regularly conducts operations aimed at curbing what it considers social vices, though its actions have sometimes drawn criticism from human rights groups.
