A 27‑year‑old woman, Asmau Nasiru, has been arrested by the Zamfara State Police Command for allegedly stealing a 10‑day‑old baby from the maternity ward of the General Hospital in Kaura‑Namoda, an act that has been linked to a wider baby‑factory syndicate. The newborn was recovered unharmed and reunited with his parents after a frantic three‑day search that involved the interrogation of hospital staff and an intelligence‑led operation that traced the infant to a nearby hamlet known as Kogin Audu.
The incident came to light on May 12, 2026, when the parents of the missing infant reported the theft at the Kaura‑Namoda Divisional Police Station. According to the police spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, investigators immediately swung into action, inviting and questioning hospital staff who were on duty at the time of the disappearance. For three agonising days, the family waited as police operatives followed up on leads and pieced together the infant’s trail.
The breakthrough came on the morning of May 15, 2026, at approximately 8:35 a.m., when the stolen baby was successfully recovered at a nearby settlement called Kogin Audu, just outside Kaura‑Namoda. A statement released by the Command on Saturday, May 16, confirmed that the infant was found unharmed and in good health. The baby was immediately reunited with his biological parents, who had spent three sleepless nights fearing the worst. The police also arrested the prime suspect, identified as 27‑year‑old Asmau Nasiru, who was taken into custody and is currently undergoing further interrogation.
The case has since taken a more ominous turn. The Zamfara State Police Command has stated that its preliminary investigations suggest the incident may be connected to a wider network of human trafficking and illegal baby‑factory operations. Police sources have indicated that the investigation is being expanded to uncover the full extent of the syndicate and to identify any other individuals who may have been involved in the procurement, transportation, or sale of the infant. The command has not ruled out the possibility that more arrests may follow as detectives dig deeper into the matter.
In response to the successful operation, the Commissioner of Police, Zamfara State Command, CP Ahmad Bello, commended members of the public for their support and timely information, which greatly assisted in the recovery of the child. He further reassured residents of the command’s commitment to combating all forms of criminality across the state, promising to communicate further developments as the investigation progresses. The police have withheld the name of the hamlet and certain details of the suspect to protect the ongoing inquiry.
The theft of a newborn from a hospital bed, and its rescue by the police, has shocked the local community and reinforced concerns about the safety of maternity wards in the region. The Zamfara State Police Command has reiterated its warning that any person found engaging in the trafficking of children will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. For now, a 10‑day‑old infant is back in his mother’s arms, and a suspect sits in a police cell, waiting to tell investigators how a child was taken from a hospital cot and what the syndicate had planned for him next.
