Samuel Ugberaese Charged in U.S. Over Alleged Wire Fraud Scheme

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has taken custody of Nigerian national Samuel Ugberaese following his extradition from Nigeria to the United States, where he is facing federal charges linked to alleged romance scam operations and money laundering.

The arrest was confirmed by U.S. authorities after Ugberaese was transferred into American custody and presented before a federal court in North Carolina, where he is expected to stand trial on multiple financial crime-related charges.

According to U.S. court records cited in federal indictments, Ugberaese is charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering in connection with an alleged international fraud network that prosecutors say targeted victims in the United States and other countries. If convicted on all counts, he faces a statutory maximum sentence of up to 40 years in prison under U.S. federal law.

The indictment, returned by a federal grand jury in the Eastern District of North Carolina on January 22, 2021, alleges that Ugberaese and co-defendants used false online identities and fabricated romantic relationships to deceive victims into sending money under fraudulent pretences. Prosecutors further allege that proceeds from the scheme were moved through multiple bank accounts and business fronts, including entities described as export-related companies, to conceal the origin and ownership of funds.

U.S. authorities say the extradition was carried out following coordinated efforts involving the FBI, the U.S. Department of Justice, and international law enforcement partners, including Nigerian security agencies. The extradition process reflects ongoing cooperation between both countries on cross-border financial crime investigations.

Ugberaese appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Brian Myers, who ordered that he remain in custody pending trial proceedings. His legal status remains that of a defendant, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The FBI confirmed that the arrest followed his arrival in the United States after extradition from Nigeria, though officials did not immediately disclose the exact timeline or location of transfer, consistent with standard procedures in ongoing federal investigations.

Prosecutors allege that Ugberaese collaborated with co-defendant Oluwadamilare Kolaogunbule, a naturalised U.S. citizen, in managing financial transactions connected to the alleged scheme. Authorities claim the operation involved structured movement of funds designed to disguise their source and avoid detection by financial institutions.

Legal proceedings are expected to continue in federal court, where prosecutors will present evidence supporting the indictment while the defence is expected to respond in accordance with U.S. due process.

The case forms part of a broader pattern of international enforcement actions targeting online fraud networks linked to romance scams, which have increasingly become a focus of U.S. federal agencies in recent years due to their financial and psychological impact on victims, particularly elderly individuals.

As of the time of reporting, no final judgment has been issued in the case, and court proceedings are ongoing.
