The Anambra State Police Command has arrested one of its officers following the death of a three-month-old baby during a police operation in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.
The incident was confirmed on Saturday, May 23, 2026, by the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, Superintendent of Police Tochukwu Ikenga, who said the officer had been taken into custody while investigations into the incident continue.
According to the police command, the tragic incident occurred on Friday evening, May 22, when police operatives were reportedly carrying out an enforcement operation in Okija. During the operation, gunfire allegedly hit the infant, leading to the child’s death.
SP Ikenga stated that the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, ordered the immediate arrest of the officer involved and directed the commencement of a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
“The command is saddened by the unfortunate incident that led to the death of the baby. The officer involved has been arrested, while the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for comprehensive investigation,” Ikenga said in the statement.
Police authorities said the command had also reached out to the family of the deceased child and assured residents that justice would be pursued in accordance with the law.
Residents of Okija reportedly expressed shock and anger over the incident, with some community members calling for transparency in the investigation and prosecution of anyone found responsible.
Okija, located in Ihiala Local Government Area, has in recent years witnessed increased security operations linked to efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat violent crime, armed groups, and cult-related activities in parts of Anambra State.
The latest incident adds to growing public concerns over civilian casualties and the use of force during security operations in parts of Nigeria. Human rights groups have repeatedly called for stronger accountability measures and improved operational standards among security personnel.
As of Saturday evening, the Anambra State Police Command had not publicly released the identity of the arrested officer, while investigators were said to be taking statements from witnesses and officers present during the operation.
