The Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team has arrested 74 suspects in two separate intelligence-led operations targeting narcotics trafficking, violent crime, and cross-border criminal activities in the Upper East Region of Ghana. The coordinated exercises, carried out on May 20 and May 22, 2026, led to the seizure of suspected narcotic substances, foreign cigarettes, and 16 motorbikes believed to have been used in the distribution of illegal drugs. A statement issued by the Ghana Police Service said the suspects include 23 Ghanaians, eight Nigerians, six Burkinabés, one Malian, and one Togolese national.

The first operation took place on May 20, 2026, at Paga within the Ghana–Burkina Faso border buffer zone, a corridor that has become a hotspot for cross-border criminal activity. The raid resulted in the arrest of 40 suspects, comprising 28 males and 12 females. During the operation, police recovered parcels and sacks of suspected narcotic substances, as well as five motorbikes alleged to have been used for the transportation and distribution of the illicit goods. The second operation was conducted on May 22, 2026, in the Navrongo Municipality, where the Special Operations Team stormed identified criminal enclaves, including the Condemned Road Corridor, the “After Six” Spot, and the “Lighter Inn” Spot. That exercise led to the arrest of 34 additional suspects, made up of 32 males and two females. Police retrieved 11 more motorbikes, quantities of suspected narcotic substances, and assorted foreign cigarettes from the Navrongo locations.

Following the arrests, the suspects were arraigned before High Court Two, presided over by His Lordship Justice Ernest Pascal Gemadzie. Sixteen of the suspects were remanded into police custody and are expected to reappear before the court on June 4, 2026. The remaining 22 suspects are currently being profiled for further action. The police said all suspects remain in custody assisting investigations, while efforts continue to identify and arrest other persons connected to criminal activities within the affected areas. The statement reaffirmed the commitment of the Ghana Police Service to intensifying intelligence-led operations across the country to combat organised crime and ensure public security.
