Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has disclosed that he experienced what he described as significant spiritual pressure and intense decision-making challenges before appointing Dr. Peter Akpe as the state's new deputy governor following the death of his former deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
Speaking during a special thanksgiving service organized in honour of Akpe in Yenagoa on Sunday, Diri said the process of selecting a successor was not driven by political considerations alone but was guided by prayer, consultations with religious leaders, and what he described as divine direction.
The governor explained that the passing of Ewhrudjakpo created a difficult vacuum within the state's leadership structure, particularly because of the late deputy governor's reputation for hard work, commitment, and loyalty to the administration's development agenda. According to Diri, replacing such a key figure required careful consideration to ensure continuity in governance.
Addressing worshippers and dignitaries at the event, the governor recounted how he sought spiritual guidance while under pressure from various interests and expectations. He stated that despite numerous opinions, speculations, and recommendations surrounding the appointment, he remained focused on seeking what he believed was God's direction.
Diri said the process ultimately led him to Akpe, whom he described as a competent administrator capable of complementing the administration's objectives and maintaining the pace of governance in Bayelsa State.
The governor emphasized that he deliberately ignored rumours and political speculation during the selection process. According to him, the overriding consideration was finding an individual with the capacity, integrity, and experience required to serve effectively as deputy governor.
He further revealed that he only recently discovered a family connection between himself and Akpe, noting that the new deputy governor originates from his maternal lineage. However, Diri stressed that the relationship played no role in the appointment and was only brought to his attention after the decision had already been made.
The governor used the occasion to reaffirm his administration's commitment to development, stability, and peace across Bayelsa State. He described the current atmosphere of peace in the state as invaluable and urged residents to continue supporting government efforts aimed at sustaining security and economic progress.

According to Akpe, raising even modest amounts for educational expenses often required extraordinary sacrifices. He said family members would sometimes contribute small sums, while his father frequently relied on loans to keep his children in school.
One of the most emotional moments in his account involved an incident in which his father was publicly humiliated over unpaid debts. Akpe said the experience left a lasting impression on him and strengthened his determination to succeed despite the obstacles facing his family.
The deputy governor further revealed that his family lived in a modest zinc-roofed house along the waterfront and endured difficult living conditions. He disclosed that some of his siblings temporarily suspended their own education to allow limited family resources to be directed toward his schooling.
Despite those hardships, Akpe said his family's fortunes gradually improved after embracing Christianity and remaining committed to hard work and faith. He noted that progress was not immediate but came through years of perseverance and resilience.
Reflecting on his appointment as deputy governor, Akpe described the position as evidence of God's faithfulness and a reminder of how dramatically circumstances can change over time. He said looking back on his childhood experiences provided perspective on the distance he had travelled in life.
