Lakurawa Group Reportedly Spreads Fear Across Niger Communities As Residents Raise Alarm Over Movements In Mashegu LGA

Published on 22 June 2026 at 09:54

Residents of several communities in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State have raised fresh security concerns over the reported movements of the Lakurawa group, an armed organisation accused of terrorising parts of northern Nigeria. The residents alleged that members of the group have been moving between rural communities while presenting themselves as religious preachers or conducting outreach activities.

The latest concerns emerged on June 20 and 21, 2026, after residents in communities including Soba, Zugurma, Kulho, and Adogon Malam in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State reportedly observed suspected Lakurawa members moving through the areas. Community sources said the group entered some settlements and engaged residents, creating fear over what they described as increased and unchecked activity.

According to residents, the group’s method of operation has raised concerns because members allegedly move into communities under the appearance of religious engagement before gaining access to local populations. Locals say this approach makes it difficult for communities to immediately identify whether the visitors pose a security threat or are conducting legitimate religious activities.

Reports from the area indicate that suspected members of the group were seen in Soba town, where residents alleged they entered after evening prayers and moved between local mosques while attempting to communicate their message. The development reportedly increased tension among residents who questioned how armed groups could move openly within communities.

The reported appearance of Lakurawa members in multiple communities within a short period has heightened fears among residents of Mashegu LGA, who say the situation shows how vulnerable rural communities can become when security presence is limited. Many locals are calling for stronger monitoring and rapid intervention by security agencies.

The Lakurawa group has been linked by security analysts to a wider militant threat affecting parts of northern Nigeria, particularly areas where weak state presence and difficult terrain have created opportunities for armed groups to operate. The group has been described as having connections to extremist networks operating around the Sahel region.

Security researchers have reported that Lakurawa initially gained influence in some border communities by presenting itself as a force against bandit attacks before later being accused of imposing its own authority and engaging in violent activities. The group’s expansion has raised concerns among security officials because of its ability to exploit local grievances and ungoverned spaces.

The spread of Lakurawa-related concerns from parts of north-western Nigeria into areas such as Niger State has increased attention on the security challenges facing communities along remote rural routes. Analysts say armed groups often exploit poorly protected areas to move personnel, gather information, and establish influence among vulnerable populations.

Residents of Mashegu communities say the reported movements have created anxiety among farmers, traders, and families who depend on daily activities in rural areas. Some fear that continued presence of armed groups could disrupt farming, education, and normal community life if authorities fail to respond quickly.

The situation also reflects broader security pressures affecting northern Nigeria, where communities have faced attacks from bandits, kidnappers, and extremist groups. Local populations have repeatedly demanded improved intelligence gathering, stronger patrols, and closer engagement between security agencies and residents.

Security experts have warned that groups operating in rural areas often rely on movement patterns that allow them to blend into communities before carrying out intimidation or recruitment activities. They say early detection and cooperation between residents and authorities remain critical in preventing escalation.

Although residents have raised alarms over the alleged activities of Lakurawa members in Mashegu, there has been no detailed public confirmation from security agencies regarding the latest reports. Authorities have not officially released information confirming the presence or specific operations of the group in the affected communities.

Community leaders and residents are urging security agencies to increase surveillance across villages in the area and investigate the reported movements. They say immediate action is needed to prevent fear from spreading and to reassure residents that their safety remains a priority.

The concerns surrounding Lakurawa come at a time when Nigeria continues to battle multiple security threats across different regions. The challenge has forced authorities to strengthen counter-terrorism efforts while addressing the local conditions that allow armed groups to gain access to rural communities.

For residents of Zugurma, Kulho, Soba, and Adogon Malam, the reported movements have become a reminder of the fragile security situation facing many northern communities. They are calling for urgent attention, better protection, and sustained security operations to prevent further threats to peace and stability.
