A Kaduna State High Court has ordered the remand of several suspects in a correctional facility following their arraignment on charges of culpable homicide over the brutal mob killing of a woman who was forcibly removed from police custody and set ablaze over unsubstantiated allegations of child theft. The case, which has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights groups and legal associations, was adjourned to July 21, 2026, for further hearing, while the Kaduna State Police Command confirmed that over 100 additional suspects remain under investigation for their alleged roles in the incident.
The victim, identified as Malama Ummulkhairi, a mother of five, was attacked on Sunday, June 21, 2026, in the Maraban Jos area of Kaduna State following unverified allegations of child theft. According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Maraban Jos received a distress call at about 10:00 a.m. and immediately mobilised officers to the scene. The police said officers rescued the woman from the crowd and took her into protective custody at the police station to ensure her safety and allow for a proper investigation into the allegations against her. However, the situation later escalated when hundreds of residents reportedly stormed the station and overpowered officers on duty. The mob forcefully removed the woman from custody, killed her and set her body ablaze.
The incident has sparked outrage and prompted reactions from various stakeholders. The Muslim Lawyers’ Association of Nigeria (MULAN), Kaduna Branch, condemned the killing, describing it as barbaric and a serious threat to the rule of law. In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 23, the association expressed shock and sadness over the attack and maintained that no allegation of criminal conduct justifies extrajudicial punishment. MULAN called for an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the killing and demanded the identification, arrest, and prosecution of all persons involved in carrying out, encouraging, or facilitating the mob action. The association also urged authorities to investigate the conduct of security personnel responsible for the custody and protection of the deceased and to apply disciplinary or legal sanctions where necessary.
Amnesty International Nigeria also condemned the killing and called for a thorough investigation into allegations that police officers may have played a role in the events leading to the woman’s death. In a statement, the rights organisation said eyewitnesses alleged that officers on duty brought the victim out of the station and handed her over to the crowd after a large mob invaded the facility. Amnesty International argued that if established, such conduct would represent a serious failure of law enforcement and accountability. The organisation warned that the increasing incidence of mob attacks poses a significant threat to the right to life and reflects systemic failures by authorities to protect citizens.
The Kaduna State Police Command has condemned the mob action and announced the arrest of several suspects in connection with the incident. The Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, warned against jungle justice and mob violence, describing such acts as a threat to public order and justice. He also warned against attacks on police formations and personnel, saying the command would not tolerate any attempt to undermine law enforcement operations. The police have launched a comprehensive investigation and assured the public that all those found culpable would be prosecuted. According to the command, over 100 additional suspects remain under investigation for their alleged roles in the incident, and those found culpable will also be arraigned in court.
The court has ordered that all suspects currently arraigned be remanded in a correctional facility pending the determination of the case. The case has been adjourned to July 21, 2026, for further hearing. The Commissioner of Police has assured the public that the command is committed to securing justice for the victim and maintaining law and order across the state. He urged citizens to report criminal allegations and grievances through lawful channels rather than resorting to violence. The incident has reignited concerns over the growing trend of mob violence and jungle justice across Nigeria, often driven by rumours, suspicion, and unverified allegations.
