An Anambra State court has ordered the remand of a couple accused of violently abusing a 10-year-old boy who was living under their care, after the police brought them before the court following an investigation into the alleged assault.
The suspects, Chukwudi Chukwuyere, a 40-year-old man, and his wife, Chisom Chukwuyere, aged 30, were remanded at a correctional centre after they appeared before the court in Anambra State in June 2026 over allegations of assault and child abuse involving the boy. The case was investigated by the Anambra State Police Command after the alleged abuse came to public attention in the Awada area of Idemili North Local Government Area of the state. The police said the couple was arrested as part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the injuries sustained by the child.
The matter attracted public attention after images and videos showing the condition of the boy circulated online, prompting concerns from members of the public and child protection advocates.
Police investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the child came under the couple’s care and what led to the injuries reportedly found on him.
The command said the suspects were taken into custody while detectives gathered evidence and interviewed individuals connected to the case.
The police investigation focused on determining whether the injuries were caused intentionally and identifying the role of each person allegedly connected to the incident.
The boy was rescued and taken for medical attention after authorities became aware of his condition.
Officials from the Anambra State Government also became involved, with the relevant social welfare authorities taking steps to ensure the child received protection and support.
The case has raised wider concerns about the safety of children placed under the care of adults who are not their biological parents.
Child protection experts have repeatedly warned that children in vulnerable situations require monitoring and intervention when signs of abuse appear.
The court remand does not mean the suspects have been convicted, as Nigerian law recognises that an accused person remains innocent until proven guilty.
The prosecution will now be expected to present evidence before the court, while the defence will have the opportunity to respond to the allegations.
The outcome of the case will depend on the evidence presented during the judicial process.
