LPPC Suspends Mike Ozekhome’s SAN Rank Pending Disciplinary Proceedings

Nigeria’s Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has suspended the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) rank of constitutional lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, pending the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings involving him. The decision has attracted attention within Nigeria’s legal community because the SAN title represents one of the highest professional recognitions available to lawyers in the country.

The suspension was approved on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, during the LPPC’s 173rd General Meeting and announced on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, in a statement signed by Kabir Akanbi, the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and Secretary of the LPPC. The committee said Ozekhome’s SAN rank was suspended pending the determination of proceedings before its Disciplinary and Ethics Sub-Committee and other related matters.

The LPPC stated that the action was taken under Paragraph 26(6) of the Guidelines for the Conferment of the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria and matters relating to the rank. The committee explained that the suspension was intended to protect the integrity, dignity and reputation of the SAN title while the issues under review are being considered.

As part of the decision, the LPPC directed Chief Mike Ozekhome to stop presenting himself or acting as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria until the disciplinary process is concluded. The committee said the measure was not a final determination but a step taken while the relevant proceedings continue before the appropriate bodies.

The SAN rank is the highest professional distinction awarded to legal practitioners in Nigeria. It is given to lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional ability, experience and contribution to legal practice and development. Holders of the rank are recognised as members of the “Inner Bar” and receive certain professional privileges within the Nigerian legal system.

Chief Mike Ozekhome is one of Nigeria’s most recognised constitutional lawyers and human rights advocates. Over several decades, he has participated in major legal matters involving constitutional issues, public interest litigation and human rights cases. His career has made him a prominent figure in Nigeria’s legal and public affairs discussions.

The LPPC said its responsibility includes ensuring that the SAN rank continues to maintain public confidence and respect. The committee explained that maintaining professional ethics and discipline within the legal profession is necessary to preserve the value associated with the title.

The suspension comes while disciplinary proceedings are ongoing before the LPPC’s Disciplinary and Ethics Sub-Committee. The committee did not provide full details of all matters being reviewed but confirmed that the proceedings were the reason for the temporary suspension.

The development has also drawn attention because disciplinary actions involving SAN holders are relatively uncommon. The LPPC has previously stated that it has the authority to take measures concerning the rank where professional conduct issues require review.

Reports indicate that the suspension is connected to ongoing legal matters involving Ozekhome, including proceedings related to a disputed property case. Authorities have been reviewing issues surrounding allegations connected to documents used in the dispute, while Ozekhome has denied wrongdoing.

The legal controversy involves a property dispute concerning a location in North London, United Kingdom. The matter has attracted attention because of claims and counterclaims relating to ownership documents and other legal materials presented during proceedings.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has also been involved in investigations connected to allegations arising from the property matter. The case has continued through legal channels, with Ozekhome maintaining his position regarding the allegations against him.

The LPPC’s decision does not amount to a declaration of guilt against Ozekhome. The committee’s statement focused on the need to preserve the credibility of the SAN rank while allowing the disciplinary process to reach a conclusion.

Legal professionals have continued to watch the proceedings because the case involves one of the country’s senior lawyers. The outcome could have implications for discussions about professional accountability and ethical standards within Nigeria’s legal profession.

The disciplinary process is expected to examine the issues before the committee and determine the appropriate outcome. Until the process is completed, Ozekhome will remain unable to use the SAN designation officially.

The Nigerian legal profession places significant importance on ethical standards because lawyers are expected to uphold principles of integrity, honesty and responsibility. The LPPC has repeatedly emphasised that disciplinary mechanisms are necessary to maintain confidence in the justice system.

The SAN title carries significant recognition within Nigeria’s courts and legal institutions. Lawyers who receive the honour are expected to maintain professional conduct that reflects the standards associated with the rank.

Ozekhome was awarded the SAN title in 2009 after years of legal practice and contributions to constitutional advocacy. His career has included involvement in several high-profile cases and public discussions on governance, law and human rights.

The LPPC’s action has therefore become a major development within the Nigerian legal sector because it involves a lawyer who has played a visible role in national legal debates.

The committee said it remains committed to ensuring that the SAN rank continues to represent excellence, discipline and professional responsibility. It added that its decisions are aimed at protecting the reputation of the legal profession.

The ongoing disciplinary proceedings will determine the next stage of the matter. Depending on the findings, the committee may decide whether the suspension should be lifted or whether further action is required.

Ozekhome’s legal representatives have not announced a final response to the suspension at the time of reporting. The matter remains before the relevant professional bodies handling the proceedings.

The case has also renewed public discussion about accountability among senior professionals in Nigeria. Observers have noted that professional titles require continuous adherence to ethical standards and public confidence.

The LPPC is expected to continue its review while ensuring that the disciplinary process follows established procedures. The committee has not announced a timeline for when the final determination will be made.

The suspension represents a significant moment for Nigeria’s legal community because it involves the temporary removal of one of the country’s most prominent lawyers from a prestigious professional rank.

As the proceedings continue, attention remains on the outcome of the disciplinary review and how the LPPC will resolve the issues before it.
