A 42-year-old man has been arrested in Nigeria’s southern Akwa Ibom State after allegedly storming a traditional ruler’s palace with a locally made firearm and issuing threats that prompted a rapid police response, authorities have said. The suspect, identified as Bassey Udo Idiong, was intercepted by operatives of the state police command following a distress call, according to an official statement released in Uyo.

Police said the incident occurred late on 1 July 2026 in Essien Udim Local Government Area, when the suspect reportedly entered the palace premises armed with a locally fabricated pistol and threatened to shoot a resident. The alarm was raised by the victim, whose identity was withheld for security reasons, triggering immediate mobilisation of officers from the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.

According to the statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, operatives acted on intelligence received through the command’s control room and moved swiftly to the scene. The suspect was reportedly disarmed without resistance, and the weapon was recovered as evidence. Officials said the intervention prevented what could have escalated into a fatal confrontation in the community.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command said the arrest forms part of ongoing security operations aimed at curbing violent crime and the circulation of illegal firearms across the state. The command noted that intelligence-led policing has remained central to its strategy in responding to emerging security threats in both urban and rural communities.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Baba Mohammed Azare, commended the officers involved in the operation, praising their professionalism and quick response. He reiterated that the command remains committed to sustaining targeted operations against armed criminality, illegal possession of firearms and other offences that threaten public safety.

Azare also appealed to residents to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely and credible information, stressing that community participation remains critical to preventing crime. He assured that all information received by the police would be treated with confidentiality to protect informants and encourage public trust.

The police said a discreet investigation has been launched to determine the origin of the recovered firearm and to establish whether the suspect acted alone or had links to wider criminal networks. Authorities added that the suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon completion of investigations.

The incident comes amid broader concerns over the proliferation of locally made weapons in parts of Nigeria, where security agencies have repeatedly warned that easy access to illegal arms continues to fuel violent crime, communal tensions and attacks on public officials and traditional institutions.

In recent years, Essien Udim and surrounding areas in Akwa Ibom State have occasionally experienced security challenges linked to armed groups and criminal networks, prompting sustained police and military operations in the region. Security analysts say such incidents highlight the ongoing pressure on law enforcement agencies to maintain order in rural communities with difficult terrain and limited surveillance infrastructure.

Traditional institutions in Nigeria, including palaces of local rulers, have increasingly become symbolic targets in disputes or demonstrations of intimidation, making them sensitive locations for security monitoring. The police have previously reinforced protection around such sites during periods of heightened tension, particularly in states experiencing political or communal unrest.

The latest arrest has been welcomed by some residents, who say swift police action helped restore calm in the affected area. However, others have expressed concern about the underlying factors contributing to the circulation of unregistered weapons in local communities, calling for stronger preventive measures and more consistent enforcement of firearms regulations.

Security officials in Akwa Ibom say ongoing operations will continue across the state, with increased patrols, intelligence gathering and coordinated responses designed to deter armed suspects and criminal groups. The police command has also warned that individuals involved in illegal possession of weapons will face prosecution under existing Nigerian firearms laws.

Authorities say the recovered locally made pistol will undergo forensic examination as part of the investigation process, while efforts are underway to trace the source of its manufacture and distribution. Police believe such steps are essential in disrupting supply chains that enable the spread of illicit weapons.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and stability across the state, urging members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. It said collaboration between security agencies and local communities remains vital to preventing future incidents of armed intimidation and violence.

As investigations continue, the suspect remains in custody, with police indicating that further details will be made public after preliminary findings are concluded. The command said it is determined to ensure that all individuals connected to the incident are identified and appropriately dealt with under the law.
