The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old suspected cultist and recovered a locally made pistol loaded with one live cartridge during a routine stop-and-search operation in the Ijaiye/Ojokoro area of the state.
The suspect, identified as Yusuf Lamina Adigun, was apprehended on Saturday, July 4, 2026, after police operatives intercepted a motorcycle carrying three passengers during a routine patrol. A search conducted on the occupants led to the discovery of the locally fabricated firearm in Adigun's possession.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, confirming that the suspect had been taken into custody. "During the search, one of the passengers, Yusuf Lamina Adigun, a 27-year-old male, was found in possession of a locally made pistol loaded with one live cartridge," the statement read.
During preliminary interrogation, Adigun confessed to being a member of the prohibited Eiye Confraternity. He further disclosed that he and other members of the cult group, who are currently at large, were on their way to launch an attack on some individuals before they were intercepted by the police. "He confessed to being affiliated with the Eiye cult group and disclosed that he and other members currently at large were on their way to attack some individuals before the police operation disrupted their movement," the police said.
The suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue. The Command also stated that efforts were ongoing to apprehend other fleeing members of the alleged cult group and recover additional weapons that may be in their possession.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, reaffirmed the Command's commitment to strengthening intelligence-led policing and proactive operations targeted at dismantling cult groups and criminal networks operating across Lagos State. "The Command remains resolute in its determination to sustain aggressive operations against cultism and other violent crimes," the statement added.
CP Fatai also appealed to residents to remain security conscious and continue to support the police with useful and timely information capable of preventing crime and improving public safety. Cult-related killings and attacks have claimed numerous lives across Lagos in recent years, prompting the police command to deploy more officers to vulnerable neighbourhoods. The arrest is part of the Command's sustained efforts to combat cultism and other violent crimes across the state.
