The Ogun State Police Command has arrested 89 motorists for violating vehicle registration number plate regulations during a statewide enforcement exercise aimed at strengthening security and curbing criminal activities. The operation, which followed a nationwide directive by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, targeted vehicles operating without registration plates or with covered, altered, or obscured number plates.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, July 4, 2026. He said the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders to intensify enforcement across the state. Coordinated operations conducted simultaneously across Ogun led to the interception of 89 vehicles and their drivers found in violation of the law.
Babaseyi explained that the exercise was a strategic preventive policing initiative designed to improve vehicle traceability, strengthen intelligence gathering, and deny criminal elements the anonymity often exploited in the commission of crimes. He noted that vehicles without proper registration or with covered and altered plates are frequently used to commit offences and evade detection. Appropriate administrative and legal actions, including prosecution where applicable, have been initiated against the offenders in accordance with extant laws and established procedures. The police warned that the enforcement exercise would be sustained across the state and that violators would continue to face sanctions.
In separate operations, the command also foiled armed robbery attempts and arrested two suspects. On Thursday, operatives of the Ogere Division, working with the Ogun State So-Safe Corps, local vigilantes, and residents, foiled a robbery attack at Akuro Phase I, Ogere Remo. The robbers had invaded a residence and dispossessed occupants of two motorcycles, mobile phones, cash, and other valuables before attempting to escape. However, a swift response by the security team forced the suspects to abandon the stolen items and flee into a nearby bush. One suspect, Abdulsalam Adam, was arrested and is assisting investigators, while a knife, an expended cartridge, and a broken padlock were recovered as exhibits.
On July 2, operatives of the Ajuwon Division responded to a distress call reporting an armed robbery incident at Baale Akinosi Area, Ajuwon, where hoodlums stole mobile phones, jewellery, a laptop, a Toyota Camry, and other valuables. The police launched a coordinated operation, and during a hot pursuit, the fleeing hoodlums abandoned the stolen vehicle and escaped. One suspect, Israel Salako, was arrested and is currently assisting investigators.
The Commissioner of Police commended the officers for their professionalism and dedication, reaffirming the command's commitment to proactive, intelligence-led policing through sustained visibility patrols, stop-and-search operations, and community partnerships. He urged motorists to comply with vehicle registration requirements and advised residents to patronise only recognised motor parks and properly identified commercial vehicles, while also appealing to the public to provide timely information to support crime prevention.
