His Excellency, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, has officially flagged off the 2025 Tree Planting Campaign at the Governor Mai Mala Buni Housing Estate on Gujba Road, Damaturu, while cautioning against the indiscriminate cutting of trees. The Governor stressed that the state government will not tolerate practices that exacerbate desert encroachment and environmental degradation.
The campaign, themed “Buni’s Initiative in Desert Reclamation and Restoration of Degraded Lands,” underscores the administration’s commitment to combating desertification, restoring degraded lands, and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.
Since 2020, the Yobe State Government has planted millions of tree seedlings across the state to halt the southward advance of the Sahara Desert. Governor Buni also highlighted key interventions, including the establishment of 100-hectare gum Arabic plantations in each senatorial district, six weather monitoring stations, distribution of fuel-efficient stoves and gas cookers, and multiple afforestation projects in collaboration with the World Bank, African Development Bank, and the Great Green Wall initiative.
In a bid to promote community participation, Governor Buni directed the State Standing Committee on Climate Change to institute annual awards and prizes for communities, schools, and individuals who plant and nurture trees across Yobe State. Traditional rulers and security agencies were tasked with enforcing regulations against unlawful tree cutting, with violators set to face legal action.
“The indiscriminate cutting of trees without replacement endangers our environment, exposes communities to desert encroachment, flooding, and soil degradation. We must plant more trees and protect existing ones,” Governor Buni warned. He urged citizens to take advantage of the rainy season to expand tree planting, emphasizing that environmental protection is a shared responsibility aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Governor Buni also expressed gratitude to development partners, including the World Bank, African Development Bank, and the Great Green Wall, for their continued support in addressing Yobe State’s environmental challenges.
Stone Reporters News gathered that this initiative reflects Yobe State’s ongoing commitment to sustainable environmental management and climate resilience.
