After years of legal battles and longstanding chieftaincy disputes, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa on Saturday, August 30, 2025, formally presented the Staff of Office to His Royal Majesty, Oba Isiaka Oseni Adu, as the Alale of Akungba Akoko in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the recognition of Oba Adu as the culmination of a long struggle for justice and community peace.
“It is only logical to allow His Royal Majesty, Oba Isiaka Oseni Adu, who obtained favourable judgments at all judicial levels, to enjoy the benefits of his legal victory in the interest of fairness, equity, and justice,” the Governor said.
While acknowledging that it was the turn of the Olugbade Ruling House to produce the next monarch following the passing of Oba Sunday Adeyeye Ajimo in March 2025, the Governor stressed that government action followed court rulings validating Adu’s claim. He reiterated that the administration remained neutral in all chieftaincy matters and appealed for calm, urging patience from the Olugbade Ruling House.
Governor Aiyedatiwa also reminded the new monarch of his responsibilities: “Kabiyesi, you are now a father to all. The Staff of Office should be used to strengthen peace, unity, and cohesion, not to victimize perceived opponents.”
Highlighting his administration’s developmental efforts in the region, the Governor noted the reconstruction of the Akungba–Ikare Road into a dual carriageway, flood mitigation projects, and safety directives for roadside traders. On security, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property through strengthened Amotekun Corps and other security agencies.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Amidu Takuro, praised the Governor’s leadership and respect for due process in resolving the longstanding dispute. Similarly, Hon. Ayo Ajana, Chairman of Akoko South West Local Government, described the event as a new dawn for Akungba, citing approval of several infrastructure projects, including dual carriageways and 5km roads across all LGAs.
In his acceptance speech, Oba Adu expressed gratitude to God and the state government, describing the installation as historic, tracing the royal family’s journey to the throne back to 1951. He pledged to prioritize unity and community development throughout his reign.
