The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, has approved the dissolution of the Ethical and Attitudinal Re-orientation Commission with immediate effect. The announcement was made in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah.
The Governor expressed his appreciation to the Chairman and members of the Commission for their service, wishing them success in their future endeavors. In line with the directive, the Chairman of the Commission has been instructed to hand over to the Director of Administration and Supplies before formal disengagement.
The Ethical and Attitudinal Re-orientation Commission was established to promote moral values, civic responsibility, and positive attitudes among citizens of Akwa Ibom State. Over the years, it championed campaigns on discipline, social order, and responsible citizenship, aligning with the state’s efforts to build a more value-driven society.
The dissolution marks a significant restructuring move by the state government as part of ongoing efforts to streamline governance and administrative operations.
Analysis:
The decision could be seen in two ways. On the positive side, it may reflect Governor Umo Eno’s resolve to cut down on redundant structures, reduce costs, and redirect resources to more impactful projects. However, critics may argue that the Commission’s work in moral and civic education remains relevant in today’s society, and its dissolution could leave a gap in addressing attitudinal change campaigns in the state. Much will depend on whether the government introduces a more effective replacement strategy or integrates the Commission’s responsibilities into other existing institutions.
