El-Rufai Accuses ONSA, Kaduna Government of Politicizing National Security

Former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has issued a strong rebuttal to statements from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Kaduna State Government, dismissing their claims that he was politicizing national security.

In a lengthy statement following his interview on Channels Television, El-Rufai argued that both ONSA and the Kaduna Government had chosen to deflect responsibility rather than address the key issues he raised. He accused them of incompetence in managing terrorism and banditry, alleging that state officials have been involved in paying off non-state actors in Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, and other northern states.

El-Rufai insisted that his comments reflected the views of distressed communities suffering from banditry and terrorism, adding that ONSA had reduced its core responsibilities to “protocol, propaganda, and politically inclined security management” instead of discreet intelligence coordination.

He further criticized the Kaduna State Government for allegedly suppressing reports of insecurity, contrasting this with his administration’s practice of publishing quarterly and annual security data during his eight years in office. He also accused ONSA of turning humanitarian aid initiatives into political propaganda, and challenged both ONSA and the Kaduna Government to provide evidence of genuine disarmament and reintegration of so-called repentant bandits.

The former governor maintained that security management should focus on equipping the military and security agencies with adequate personnel, equipment, and technology rather than, in his words, “mollycoddling bandits.” He warned that continued politicization of security could plunge the country into deeper instability.
