Abia Government Responds to Criticism by Former APGA Governorship Aspirant

The Abia State Government has responded to recent comments made by Chief Chikwendu Udensi, a former APGA governorship aspirant, regarding the administration of Governor Alex Otti. According to the government, Udensi’s statements on projects and governance in the state are “predicated on misinformation and misrepresentation.”

The government addressed claims regarding the Port Harcourt Road project, clarifying that the road, constructed by Julius Berger, is a 6.7-kilometre dual carriageway with six lanes, contrary to Udensi’s assertion of 5.7 kilometres. Officials explained that the cost of the project, when calculated per kilometre, aligns with standard road construction benchmarks. They also highlighted that the road, previously in a state of disrepair, now includes modern drainage systems and other infrastructure improvements.

Regarding allegations about school renovation expenditures, the government stated that all budgetary allocations are captured in audited accounts, with no missing funds, and that the education sector has witnessed measurable improvements under Governor Otti’s administration.

The government also rejected Udensi’s claim that the Governor runs a “one-man show”, noting that weekly Executive Council meetings and monthly Expanded State Executive Council meetings involve the Governor, Deputy Governor, SSG, Chief of Staff, Commissioners, Permanent Secretaries, and other appointees. Furthermore, initiatives such as the creation of the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), Greater Ohafia Development Authority (GODA), and the reorganisation of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) are intended to decentralise power and enhance governance.

The statement criticised Udensi for repeatedly misrepresenting facts in the media, suggesting that his commentary is politically motivated ahead of the 2027 elections. It urged him to desist from actions that, in the government’s view, undermine constructive political discourse in the state.

The statement was issued by Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, on 2nd September 2025.
