Abia State Sets Up Emergency Team to Provide Potable Water in Ohanso

The Abia State Government has established an emergency management team to provide potable water to residents of Ohanso in Ukwa East Local Government Area, following reports of contaminated water in the community. The team is led by the Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Professor Joel Ogbonna.

The announcement was made by Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, on Monday at Government House, Umuahia, during a briefing on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

Prince Kanu explained that the move was prompted by health risks associated with hydrocarbons found in drinking water. “The State Ministry of Health will investigate the extent of danger posed to residents and assess how ingestion of hydrocarbons may have affected their health. This immediate action reflects the government’s commitment to providing prompt solutions to communities under threat,” he stated.

Cultural Initiatives and Industrial Development
Prince Kanu also disclosed that the State Executive Council has approved the mandatory wearing of traditional outfits by council members every first Monday of the month and by civil servants every Friday. The initiative aims to promote locally made fabrics, showcase indigenous craftsmanship, and strengthen Igbo cultural identity.

He further revealed that earthworks have commenced at the Abia Industrial and Innovation Park (AIIP), with compensation completed for affected residents. HSI Energies, the company behind the Modular Refinery project at the park, has reportedly secured almost all necessary approvals from regulatory bodies.

Prince Kanu highlighted ongoing road construction, reconstruction, and maintenance across the state, noting 55 direct-labour projects, with five completed during the period under review.

Hydrocarbon Contamination in Ohanso
Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Professor Joel Ogbonna, explained that the decision to provide potable water followed reports that a borehole dug in Ohanso revealed a substance suspected to be crude oil, contaminating drinking water. A detailed investigation prompted the government to form a committee to address the issue and ensure residents have safe water.

The briefing was attended by Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, and Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma.
