Legal experts and party officials have reiterated that matters relating to congresses of political parties fall strictly within the internal affairs of the parties, affirming the right of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to proceed with its November 2025 National Convention in Ibadan.
The clarification follows statements by the Minister of the FCT, His Excellency Barr. Nyesom Wike, and others concerning disputes arising from some organs of the PDP. Legal opinion holds that these 6-point conditions cited do not constitute any legal impediment to the party’s convention.
This position was reinforced by the Supreme Court in the case of Senator Samuel Anyanwu v. Aniagwu Emmanuel & 3 Ors (SCV/CV/18/2025). The lead judgement, delivered by Justice Jamilu Tukur (JSC), overturned an earlier Court of Appeal decision that had sacked Senator Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the PDP, emphasizing that leadership and membership issues within a political party are strictly internal matters and not subject to judicial interference.
Justice Tukur noted that exceptional circumstances for court intervention—such as constitutional mandate, criminal activity, or violation of contractual rights—were absent in the case, leading to the reinstatement of Senator Anyanwu as the substantive National Secretary.
Reacting to the development, Chief Bemgba Iortyom, Immediate Past State Publicity Secretary of PDP, Benue State, stressed that grievances over congresses must be resolved within the party. He urged that a new National Working Committee (NWC) with a fresh mandate be entrusted with addressing outstanding disputes after the Ibadan Convention.
Chief Iortyom further emphasized that holding the convention as scheduled is critical for PDP’s image and morale, underscoring the importance of demonstrating the party’s viability as a credible opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Ibadan Convention is therefore set to proceed, signaling that the PDP remains active, functional, and prepared to provide a platform for Nigerians in the next general elections.
