The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has issued an interim order restraining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from proceeding with its planned national convention slated to hold next month in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Justice James Omotosho granted the order after three PDP officials—Austine Nwachukwu (Imo State Chairman), Amah Abraham Nnanna (Abia State Chairman), and Turnah George (South-South Secretary)—filed a suit challenging the legality of the upcoming convention.
The plaintiffs contended that the PDP violated both its constitution and the 1999 Constitution by failing to conduct congresses in 14 states, a procedural lapse that, they argued, invalidates the party’s planned convention.
Listed as defendants in the case are the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the PDP itself, National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, the National Working Committee, and the National Executive Committee.
The ruling effectively halts the party’s preparations for the convention, which had been anticipated to address pressing leadership and structural challenges as the PDP positions itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.
