Makarfi Warns Nigeria’s Security Crisis Nears State Of War, Urges Tinubu To Declare Emergency

Former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi has raised concerns over the worsening security situation in Nigeria, describing the current state of insecurity across the country as approaching a level close to a state of war.

Makarfi made the statement on Sunday, June 21, 2026, during an interaction with journalists in Kaduna State, where he discussed the country’s security challenges and urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to take stronger measures to address the situation.

The former governor, who also served as national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said the growing insecurity requires a major shift in government priorities, stressing that security should become the central focus of governance at both federal and state levels.

According to Makarfi, the situation on the ground shows that security challenges have continued to expand across different parts of the country, affecting communities and creating concerns among citizens.

“The reality is that on the ground, the security challenges are becoming wider. So, for me, rather than criticising, it is rather to advise,” Makarfi said during the media interaction.

He advised President Tinubu, in collaboration with state governments, to consider declaring a national emergency on insecurity as a way of coordinating a stronger response to the threats facing the country.

Makarfi said such a declaration would allow government institutions to reorganise their approach and place security at the top of national priorities.

“The President, working together with state governments, should declare a national emergency on security. Governance should change so that the number one, two and three priorities are security in all facets,” he said.

His comments come amid continued security concerns in several parts of Nigeria, including attacks by armed groups, kidnapping incidents, banditry, and other forms of criminal activities affecting communities.

Northern Nigeria has particularly faced prolonged security challenges, with several states experiencing attacks that have affected residents, farming activities, businesses, and movement across communities.

The former Kaduna governor’s remarks add to ongoing national discussions on how authorities can improve security coordination, intelligence gathering, and protection of civilians.

Beyond security matters, Makarfi also spoke on political issues, rejecting calls for the deregistration of political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He argued that political parties that meet the requirements set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should be allowed to participate in future elections.

Makarfi maintained that strengthening democratic participation remains important and that political competition should be guided by established electoral rules.

The former governor’s comments have renewed attention on the need for a broader national conversation about security reforms and effective governance as Nigeria continues to face complex security challenges.

As insecurity remains a major concern for citizens and policymakers, calls for stronger action from government authorities continue to grow across different regions of the country.
