Members of the House of Representatives have expressed concern over alleged terrorist threats targeting the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, warning that such attacks could paralyze legislative functions and endanger Nigeria’s democratic stability.

The revelation came from Hon. Garba Muhammad, Chairman of the House Committee on Internal Security, during a public hearing on a bill proposing the creation of the Legislative Security Directorate — a specialized agency aimed at enhancing security coordination within the parliament.

According to Muhammad, intelligence briefings received by the committee indicated that terrorist elements had issued threats to bomb the National Assembly and that some protesters had also threatened to shut down the complex.

“We have received threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly Complex and from protesters to lock it up. Legislators are increasingly exposed to intimidation from individuals who gain unauthorized access to their offices,” Muhammad stated.

The lawmaker highlighted several security breaches in recent months, including car and motorcycle thefts, cases of vandalism, the use of fake identity cards, and infiltration by unregistered visitors, describing the situation as “a growing risk that must be urgently tackled.”

He stressed that the proposed Legislative Security Directorate would ensure a more professional and coordinated security structure, capable of preventing both internal and external threats to Nigeria’s legislature.
