Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has said that if the Nigerian government continues to fail in protecting Christians from attacks, then foreign Christians — including Americans — should be allowed to intervene.

Speaking on the rising cases of religious persecution and insecurity across parts of Nigeria, Lawal stressed that Christian communities have the right to seek help when their safety is no longer guaranteed by their own government.

Quoting from the Bible, Lawal said it is the duty of believers to be their “brother’s keeper,” adding that if American Christians, including supporters of former U.S. President Donald Trump, decide to help Nigerian Christians in distress, their actions would be Biblical and justified.

“In the Bible, we are taught to be our brother’s keeper. If American Christians decide to come to the aid of Nigerian Christians because they are in distress, that is Biblical. They are within their right to do so if Christians feel they are unable to defend themselves,” he said.

Lawal called on the Nigerian government to prove that it can provide peace and prosperity for all citizens, warning that if it fails to do so, it has no moral ground to criticize any group seeking external help.

“The government should assure us that they can provide the peace and prosperity we desire. If they cannot do that, they cannot blame any part of society that decides to seek help from others,” he added.

The former SGF also expressed frustration with what he described as the government’s dismissive attitude toward public concerns, saying citizens who raise genuine issues are often insulted rather than listened to.

“When you talk to the government, they send people to insult you and say all sorts of things. The government should secure us, and when they do, we can then join them to tell the Americans to stay away from our land,” he stated.

Lawal’s remarks have stirred renewed debate over the Nigerian government’s handling of religious violence and the rights of citizens to seek international support in the face of persistent insecurity.
