A farmer has been killed in a fresh attack by suspected gunmen in Butura Gida village, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, marking another tragic incident in the region's worsening security crisis. The attack occurred at approximately 7:47 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, 2026, according to a post shared on X by security analyst Zagazola Makama.

Troops of Sector 5 of Operation Enduring Peace reportedly rushed to the community after receiving a distress call. However, by the time security personnel arrived at the scene, the attackers had already fled the area. The troops found the lifeless body of the farmer but were unable to trace the assailants, security sources quoted by Zagazola said. A manhunt has since been launched to identify and arrest those behind the attack.

The latest killing came less than 24 hours after another violent incident in Plateau State, where a 13-year-old herder, identified as Mustapha Abdul Kadir, was reportedly found dead alongside four cattle in Mangu Local Government Area. Authorities suspect that armed militia carried out that attack. Earlier the same day, two residents were also reportedly killed in Torok community in Riyom Local Government Area in an attack blamed on suspected Fulani bandits.

The series of attacks have raised fresh concerns over the worsening security situation in Plateau State, where repeated clashes and reprisal attacks between farming and herding communities have continued to claim lives and destroy livelihoods. The state has witnessed a surge in violence in recent months, with attacks on farming communities becoming increasingly frequent. On July 5, a 40-year-old female farmer was killed and another woman injured after gunmen attacked farmers in Rinyan village, Tahoss community, Riyom Local Government Area. In June, at least 18 farmers were killed and several others injured in an attack on Kawel village in Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area.

The attacks have also drawn attention to the broader security challenges in Nigeria's North-Central region, where competition over land and resources between farming and herding communities has fueled cycles of violence, displacement, and humanitarian suffering. Local authorities and community leaders have repeatedly called on the Federal Government to deploy more security personnel and intensify efforts to protect rural communities from attacks. The military has intensified patrols and operations across affected areas, but the attacks have continued unabated, raising questions about the effectiveness of current security measures.

As the manhunt for the perpetrators of the latest killing continues, residents of Butura Gida and surrounding communities remain on edge, fearing further attacks. The Plateau State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but security forces have assured residents that efforts are ongoing to apprehend those responsible and restore peace to the affected areas. The latest tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for a comprehensive and sustained security response to end the cycle of violence that has claimed too many lives and disrupted too many livelihoods across Plateau State.
